Temporary Registration
If you are ill while away from home you should first contact your registered practice and request telephone support. Current technology and operating models allow remote consultation, assessment and prescribing so many practices will be able to offer you appropriate care remotely without the need for you register elsewhere. Prescriptions can be sent electronically to any pharmacy in the country to allow you access this treatment wherever you are.
If you are not registered with a doctor but medical assistance, you should seek out the nearest walk-in centre or contact 111. If you are staying in the UK for more than 3 months, you should register with a regular GP as soon as possible to receive any ongoing treatment or further acute assistance you may need.
You can be registered as a temporary patient for up to three months. This will allow you to be on the local practice list and still remain a patient of your permanent GP. After three months you will have to permanently register with that practice.
To register as a temporary patient simply contact the local practice you wish to use. Practices do not have to accept you as a temporary patient. You cannot register as a temporary patient at a practice in the town or area where you are already registered.
